Can anything be done with this?

Yes
I've got a great photo (in my eyes anyway) of my daughter that is just out of focus/blurry.

Is there anything that can be done to improve the focus/blurriness?

I have PS CS3 if that helps!

Yes it is a lovely photo; you have caught a great moment. Excellent.

But....

Not sure there is anything you can do to make it pin sharp. Maybe you could process it in a way that makes the un-sharpness insignificant or uses the lack of sharpness as a sort of feature. Have a look through the various filters and see what you can come up with.

Is this any better? Or maybe worse?

I just used the Canon Digital Photo Professional software and sharpened it. The software comes free with the camera or you can download it from their site.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can download it from Canon, you used to be able to download updates, but unless things have changed I'm fairly sure you can't download the full program, although I honestly cant see a good reason why you shouldn't be able to get it from there.

You may well be right, but I didn't see anything on the site to say you can't. I have only downloaded to update mine.

Try This one as well!

This uses advanced kernel sharpening in photoshop. Main problem is that the hair to the right is blurred which makes the pic look worse, I've done some editing to make it look more of a Lens Aperture effect which enhances the face more etc. Would need the full size original pic to do it properly though. Or you could just selectively sharpen the eyes and add more lens blur to the hair and clothing? It could have been taken with an 85mm f/1.2 now (as you're a Canon user) ;)

Edit:
I meant to add that it is a wonderful image, full of happiness and joy. I love it! :)

:plusone:

The edit by V8burble is my favourite so far - I'd have gone with dropping the clarity on ACR a touch to make it look like it was supposed to be slightly blurry!

And gorgeous image by the way - her first day at school?

Thank you. Yes doing anything to try and sharpen hair is generally not a good idea, it's normally easier to take it the other way and make a feature of that. First day at school? Yes could be, that's a nice thought... I wish my memories of going back to school gave me that expression though :(

I prefer the original soft version.
All the sharpened versions take it too far for the detail available.

I also think V8burble has done a good job. I thought the original focused somewhere around the nostrils. V8burbles takes the focus to the eyes.:)

Hi Badger
Lovely pic
Here's my edit.
Think the lads above have pretty much taken everything from the PP.

That looks almost perfect to me!

My effort!

Done in The GIMP (For FREE!) using unsharp mask

V8burble - that's great, how do you add lens blur? I think I know how to sharpen but lens blur is new to me.

Yes it was first day at school. Its not often we get a good natural smile from her - she has a fake photo smile which isn't the best!!!! That's why I want to try all I can to make it 'better'!!

What edit software are you using? I used Photoshop CS3, but I expect most packages have it. In CS3 it is in Filter>>Blur>>Lens blur.
The trick is when making your selection to use a blur filter on(or sharpen for that matter) is to feather the selection so that you don't get a hard edge to your edit and to make your selection shape such that it follows a focal plane rather like a contour line on a relief map so that it is natural, and don't over do it.
If you need help, or indeed wish me to edit the high res image just PM me :)

I'm using CS3 as well - by feathering do you mean use a soft brush?

how about a b&w conversion

I really like that bleach bypass :)
But I'm also for selective sharpening the eyes and a little blur to the hair.
