but there is dust and a shadow i just can't remove!

Dunno if it's just my luck but I've seen it far more often. The problem is that, like HDR, the plugin is being used to 'save' mediocre shots instead of making a good image great.
 
TBH - I'm not sure that original shot needs saving. It appears to have a very shallow DOF but the exif says f/5.6. There is an area dead centre that looks in focus. I'd guess that focus on the eyes would have worked better.

As for the fractalius debate - I thought JD's edit made it look like a flying dog - not that that's a bad thing :) It just doesn't look like a wasp anymore.

Its an entertaining filter that works well on some shots and not others. It doesn't rescue a bad shot - the light and composition needs to be right to start with.
 
I like the shot as is and am not sure what bits you want to "remove".

I know where you're coming from and have to agree. Although I wouldn't say HDR, I think what you mean is the tonemapping process that is usually taken way too far.

I can see the usefulness of HDR and tonemapping but fail to see past the gimmicky nature of Fractalus.

With regards to the OP I think it's the removal of the dust and dirt on the wasp's head and the shadow underneath it.
