I've had a query about good software for organising and cataloguing images, and I'm hoping that by posting my friend's query here, there may be some recommendations I can pass on to him.

I need good software for cataloguing images - many thousands of images - and keywords. I would hope that the data would be easily exportable into, and compatible with, a widely-used programme such as Exel.
The other priority is that it has to be easy to use - my wife will be doing the cataloguing!!! Whatever it is, it has to be good.

Thanks for any advice.

Lightroom has cataloging and keywording facilities as part of the suite.

Otherwise you need a DAM (digital asset management) and there are many. One I'm playing with is Studioline photo classic - PC only and cheap £15. Not yet sure of its export abilities.

Thanks very much andrew. Seem to be lots of votes around for Lightroom.

Pretty sure Picasa from Google does keywording. It is pretty simple to use and as it is free might be worth a try.

If you want to export keywords into Excel then I think you will have a problem. Most cataloging programs tend to store the data in a data base rather than a spreadsheet. Also there can be image data as well, withing the DB. Lightroom uses SQL lite so unless you are proficient in retrieving data from SQL based programs you may have problems.

here's a link to probably the best DAM forum on the net. They may be able to give you more information as to getting the information out of the system
