Can anyone help me sort out the right colour range settings?

I'm trying to do a sky replacement using the colour range method but once I get the new sky in place and select colour range what I get is this screen that doesn't allow me to do anything:

It should look like this before I can do anything, but how can I change the settings to get it to work?:

How and what do I need to do to sort the settings out so I can use it? What would I have done to muck the settings up to get like this, as I haven't used the colour range tool before?
 
You have the Quick Mask Selection Preview on....change that to look like the other one (note; it is the bottom drop down box in the flyout window)
