Yes
I know that this will seem daft but a wee while ago when I checked the shutter count of my D700 it was around 8600 clicks, but when I checked recently its only just over 6000 - infact 6039... Now either I am going or have gone mad but I am almost 100% sure that it was in the 8000's...

I have checked two sites exif opanda & myshuttercount for the exif data, now is there any more that I can use to check to see that it is infact just over 6000 actuations?

Obviously if it is correct then I have a really bad memory but looking back at a price check thread I did say that it was under 9000 (about 8months ago)....

Can you find any old photos with a shutter count showing 8,000 ish?

You've lifted someone else's camera at the last TP meet

You are not looking at the shutter count, you are looking at the 4 digit filename, which is different.

You can start every new session by resetting the filename to DSC0001 if you wish, but the shutter count will continue to increase.

Opanda or another exif programme will give you the number of shutter actuations that your camera has made.

Are you sure you don't have a couple of Nikon D700's? Most photographers tend to have more than one cameras, and often the same make and model, so you sure you haven't mixed the two up? Maybe one EXIF with count of 6000 was taken by the D700, but the EXIF with 8600 was taken by either a different D700 or even a similar camera, maybe a D300 or a D70?

You weren't under pressure, stressed, tried, feeling sleepy, anything like that when you looked at the numbers, and confused the 6 and 8, it says 8000 but your lack of sleep means you thought you saw 6000??

You also sure you're not mistaking file numbering system for shutter count???

As far as I know, there is no way a shutter count can reset or anything like that.

Got to be software error, if not mixing up the cameras. Had to be software error.

Got to be that reason but...

The OP already mention used Opanda and Myshuttercount, and seems to be aware of what is an EXIF data, so I image the OP must know the different between filename and shutter count.

But still, I have to agree with you, gotta be reading a filename and thinking it is shutter count.

Yes.

I've discussed this with Nikon and there seem to be cases of shutter counts getting reset. There are a couple of reports on the internet.

It's supposed to be impossible but it ain't.

I managed to reset my d3s. Removing the internal battery seemed to do it.

Software such as that mentioned above, may or may not be 100% accurate and shouldn't be relied on to guarantee it is right.
The only reliable way is to have, in my case Canon, check the shutter count and I would expect it would be the same would be for Nikon.

Did you set the camera to operate in rear time travel? It is accessed via the menu

Your right I do know the what the difference is an I was going on both myshuttercount & opanda exif data programs.....

No I wasn't going on the file number neither to any of those who said I MAY have ;)

6 8 have you considered a good optician?

If removing the internal battery resets the count, is it possible that the battery ran out of power while not being used for a while perhaps? Then when you've started using it its charged the battery up and started counting from scratch.

Sometimes when computers aren't used for a while, or there's a problem with the bios battery (a little battery on the motherboard) they lose their default settings of time, date, boot method etc. just an idea! :)
