I am about to order myself the Canon EOS R6ii but will be using it with EF lenses. I will need an adaptor ring, but is it worth getting the one with the control ring adaptor. What advantage is the control ring?

Thanks for your help as always.

Mick

Ring one might be marginally better in some limited scenarios, like trying to quickly adjust white balance on a video shoot but for the most part it is completely identical yet considerably more expensive. I'm not in any hurry to upgrade

It depends how you shoot. You could assign ISO or exposure compensation to it.
You could but there are already dials on the body for this

Grab whichever one is available at the price you can absorb. I got the control ring one because it was the same price as the non-control ring one.

Would I miss the control ring if I'd not got it, probably. Would I feel the same if I had the non-ring version? Doubtful - if you never have it you won't missing it IMHO

I'm biased because my muscle memory is not trained for the control ring so I never use it. Trying to be objective I think it's something between "nice to have" and gimmick.

I ended up with one of each and actually find the control ring annoying as it falls too easily to hand and gets accidentally turned!

If I had picked up the control ring adaptor with my first EOS camera, I'd have welcomed it as my muscle memory was still there for aperture.

But 20 yrs of shooting EOS; having aperture on the front dial, and exp comp on the rear ring, I'd have to retrain myself.

I've a few RF lenses with control rings, but they're ignored.

I suppose the answer is - if you think you could change the way you shoot to take advantage; then buy it. But for me, I'm too old / set in my ways.

Thanks folks, I really appreciate your comments.

Until Phil's comment I was happy to go with the plain adaptor ring. However, as my muscle memory is still in its infancy, aperture control on this seems a viable option so I think I will go for it.

So thanks again for your input, and thank you Phil for highlighting what I feel may be a useful option.

Good call
My muscle memory is such that I actively didn’t like the R6ii cos it was too different to the R6 (I used the test drive)
And bear in mind I’ve had >20 EOS cameras.

I was going to wait before pushing the buy button, but learning controls to then relearn swayed my decision to go for it now.

The other thing is position. on a short lens it may help, but on the longer lenses its in the wrong position. My 100-500 has a control ring at the camera side of the lens but its just impossible to use unless you have mamouth hands....
