(hope I posted this on the right forum-it is mainly and equipment question)

Hi

Since taking up photography as a hobby a couple of years ago I've been trying my hand as different genres and styles to see what "floats my boat". One thing I've tried in the past is long exposure shots and bing creative with the light. (below I've put an example which i would welcome some C&C on from more experienced photographers)

I would like to start playing with some much longer exposure shots (using ND filters and weilding glass) but do not yet have a off camera trigger. I was also hoping that some one on here could give me some advice on what is the best trigger to get. I know that at times a remote trigger will be useful. Also definatly a time release trigger. maybe one which will take multiple timed exposures for things like star trails? is there a trigger which does all of these? any advice in this area would be great. I don't have a lot of cash to splash but I also don't want to buy a piece of c*&p (I did have a cheap cable trigger but it broke)

Many Thanks

For basic long exposures, and star-trails you just need the basic cable release like the Canon RS60e3 for example (whichever one is made for the 40D). All you need is to be able to lock the shutter open, which that would allow you to do without any extra batteries for a wireless release.

For star-trails you don't want gaps between exposures, so a regular release is fine. You just lock the camera on burst mode shooting 30 second exposures (for example) one after the other.

If you want to get into more serious timelapse projects and other things then look at an intervalvometer like Ian says. The Canon one is hideously expensive. I'm sure someone will be along with experience of knock-off variants soon enough.

Many thanks for the response guys thats great. Really appreciate the advice. I WILL be posting picks on TP of my long exposure shots.
