We are expecting our first child imminently, and i would like to buy my wife a camera. Needs to be relatively simple to use as my wife does not know her ISO for aperture. I have an omd em5 with lenses, so am either looking at a micro four thirds mount or a non interchangeble lens compact.

Touch and tilt screen would be nice, and a decent low light focusing would be handy as I imagine a lot of shots will be in indoors with not great light.

Recommendations please!

I'm guessing she wants point and shoot.
try looking at the Canon G1

Phil, have you asked he what she would like? - or are you're buying the train set "for the child" at the same time? ;)

i bought my wife a nice little fuji bridge camera a few years ago i think she's used it twice
the moral of the tail is does you wife really want a camera and will she actually use it, i know mine is happy she has her own camera but she doesn't use it she uses her phone and relies on me for the rest

i would show your wife a few different models and see which one she likes

Xf1. In EXR mode it produces some lovely shots, and it's nice and pocketable. Wife Acceptance Factor is high and it has full manual controls and a decent sensor. Also looks good in red leather.

If you're looking for M43 I'll be advertising my boxed EPL5 and kit lens in the next few days (superb camera with touch and tilt screen as you were wanting) :D

Take her to a camera shop. It'll save hassle ;) She might not want what you think she wants. Less of a surprise but less of a risk.

Panasonic and Sony both do good zoom compacts. There aren't really many bad cameras around if you stick to well known manufacturers. It mainly comes down to personal taste and ergonomics.

Maybe - I think it may well be the case that I want my wife to get a decent camera more than she wants one! So any camera I get will likely be second hand just in case she doesn't use it. I just want the pictures she takes to be better than cameraphone shots, which are not great in indoor light levels. I quite like the epl5, lets see what the wife thinks of that one.

And it was always Scalextric for me rather than train sets!

So let her use your camera if she wants to. Good practice for teaching your children to share nicely!

Save your money for Scalextric.. ..

When OH was looking for a decent compact a couple of years ago he did a huge amount of research and ended up with a Lumix TZ20/ZS10. The main selling point for him was the Leica lens and I have to say it does produce good quality images. It's also small enough for him to carry around everywhere in his pocket - a serious consideration for a new parent already loaded down with 10 tons of baby paraphernalia

I read the title and the best offer I can make is a Fuji bridge camera. But if it's the winning bid, I'll have to clear it with the missus.

I've now read the post...

Ignore the above.

Strangely, I was just about to move this into the classifieds under "For Sale/Trade"... ;)

If you want M4/3 for her then get the GF3, what they did to make the GF5 was to move the sensor a tiny bit to stop it overheating during long video session and then tipex out the 3. It's small, has a great touch screen and a Ai mode powered by witchcraft. The screen isn't tilt but my daughter has never had a problem with it.

You pretty much cant go wrong the Sony RX100. Very easy to use, excellent on full Auto (which she may like), excellent images, very small (really is pocketable), best panorama mode around, decent flash, and the Mk1 can be found used for a couple of hundred in pristine condition - I know I sold ours here for that!

Hi all, many thanks for the responses. Im veering towards an epl5, as that means wifey can use my lenses. If I do go for a compact, the rx100 with its large sensor or lx7 with its fast lens look nice.

Unless I get distracted by Scaletrix.....!

With all due respect, it's fairly obvious that you're a first time dad with an underestimated idea of the demands that new babies can make on a first time mum
