Good afternoon film gurus :)

After my recent playing with my AE-1, I have developed lets call it... a craving to experiment more with some film (god help my poor wallet!)

I'd like to know what options there are camera wise, when looking for something a little more up to date. Features I would be looking for would include:

- AF
- AP/TV as well as manual exposure control
- Maybe selectable metering modes instead of just center weighted (not necessary but would be a bonus)
- Would work with my EF Canon lenses I already own and use with my 40D

I'm not really sure whats out there film gear wise, and I realise I could be asking for the impossible, so any advice would be appreciated

I guess budget wise I would be looking to spend around £100, maybe £150 at a push.

A Canon T90 will do all of that apart from use your EF lenses. Having said that, Canon FD lenses can be acquired for not very much money at all, so might be worth considering.
 
For £100 I'd be looking for an EOS 3, fantastic camera. It'll work with all your EF lenses, has multiple metering modes, 45 point AF from the eos1v, is quick, quiet and well put together.
 
cheers peeps, plenty of reading up I can be doing while I gather funds :) I did a quick scout around, I think the EOS-1v is going to wind up costing over budget, looks like a lovely camera though!
 
Another vote for a EOS-3 - lovely cameras, works with all my canon glass (apart from the ef-s kit lens on the 450D) and handles so well, it's got me saving up for a 5Dii as nothing else i've tried feels quite the same.
 
I have the EOS 5 + Grip and I really like it. I can use with manual focus lenses and EF lenses as well.
 
I think on here most seem to go for the EOS 3 which seems to satisfy most of your requirements.

The T90 is a cracking camera (I have one) light easy to use has multiple spot metering BUT as pointed out will not work with the EF lens range.

EOS 1 cameras are also great (I have a EOS1n RS) but as they are pro cameras will be heavier then the 40D or AE1 which may be something or not.
 
You could also look at a 50e or 5 with eye control focussing, brilliant idea.
The 5 doesnt have vertical eye control, the 50e does, the 5 is more expensive than the 50e, the 50e is technically a better camera, albeit an 'amateur' model, the 5 being more of a 'pro' model (it was developed off the back of the 5), the 5 feels nicer in the hands though.

50e were going very cheap last time I looked (which is why I havent sold mine, or my 5, that and I'm a horder, I also have an AE1).

The EOS film bodies feel much nicer than the AE1 in the hands too.

B&W and self developing doesnt cost too much, you wont need a darkroom (they do bags you can use to get film out of canister and into dev tank), then you will need a scanner of course :) flatbeds are pretty good these days.

I've got a canon eos 500n you can have. It's nothing special, but it fits ef lenses and will do all the things you want it to, and will only cost you postage/packaging. Let me know if you want it.

See people keep saying this which makes me wonder how much I really want a 5D mkII myself ;)

Have to wait until feb before I can splash the cash at that though :bonk:
