Camera Loan with a catch...

After reading a thread this morning asking "What's film like these days?" it sort of hit a note for me...'cos I have a wide selection of cameras here (OK yes, lots of them are half frame) and I doubt if I will ever use them in anger, at least not all of them. As far as I know they are all OK and I've pretty much sorted any issues they have. What I'd like to do is maybe loan a couple out for someone to run a film through just for the hell of it and to confirm that the cameras are good or not. Your risk - a film and a developing cost... my risk, loaning out a camera to a complete stranger!

I think at first I will drop a list in this thread of the cameras I think will actually be available at the start and ask for "volunteers". Then, maybe have a peek at the trading detail for people wanting a loaner (or just general posting and so on to get an idea of the type of person) before deciding to go further. It would be a requirement though to post final pics (or at least the good ones!) here so all can see how good or bad they are and I get an idea of whether my cameras need just a polish or more work after all. The volunteers would need to be prepared to buy a film, run it through the camera and get it processed, as well as post the camera back to me afterwards. I would post the camera out to them at my cost.

Think carefully about this, I am not expecting a 6 month loan and the cameras are most definitely not going to be for sale - they are my collection, my babies... and they belong here.

Here's a few cameras to start with:

Rollei 35 LED (maybe with the 100XL flash)
Minox 35 GT
Voigtlander Vitomatic 11a

Konica EYE (1/2 frame)
Yashica Samurai 3.0 (1/2 frame)
Olympus Pen EE (1/2 frame - testing for travelling camera project)

I may add more later but try these initially and see if they light any fires. I do not want more than a couple out at a time though... too big a hole on the shelf! If there's a 1/2 frame anyone wants to try - ask and if I have one we'll see. Because of the nature of my collection... tending towards the smaller pocket-sized cameras, don't expect slr's or anything like that.

Fantastic, can I borrow one please? Which of the half-frames do you recommend?

Just done a tiny bit of research and the Konica looks interesting. So would love to borrow that. More than happy to post results, although don't expect anything Baileyesque :D

Do you want full-on auto or the option to go commando? Star Trek or Maltese Falcon?

Only if you don't have a light meter... the Samurai does not have a manual mode.

Something I have taken part in on another forum is a 'travelling camera'. People sign up and PM their home address to the organiser (usually the camera owner) and the camera is sent to the first person who takes one or two frames (depending on the number taking part). This person then sends it to the next person and so on until it is returned to the owner who processes the film and posts all of the images.

The one I took part in started in Canada, and returned via Ireland, England, France, Norway and the US.

I do like the option of making a few adjustments, obviously easier in commando mode :D

That would be the Konica then Nick, unless...

Sounds fun, I would love to do that with one of the 1/2's, get more piccies! First I would need to make sure it worked, thinking of one of the Olympus Pens here... maybe I could add one to the list for testing. Fairly simple to use, set either the aperture or the ASA then point and click.

**Edit - Pen added to test list **

Hi Arthur,

As you say they're 'your babies' so happy to fit in with your plans. Love the look of the little Konica but also I've never tried the Pen. If you're OK with the idea of the traveling camera I'd also be up for that.

Cool idea! this minght work really well with a platsic fantastic like a lomo or holga ;)

What I'd like to see is a younger person have the Pen, as I said once you set the ISO you can point and click... if it's too dark the shutter won't fire - simples.

I suspect the first camera out of the fold will be the Konica then - Nick can you PM me your address please and be aware, this camera will only auto up to 400 ASA, anything past that and you are on manual! I will need an undertaking too that any damage will be covered by the borrower I think, to be fair.

That counts me out then :lol::lol:

The travelling camera thing is a mixed blessing. I've sent my Lubitel out two or three times. Once was a bit of a disaster with some people being a real let down in their behaviour. Joxby sent a travelling clack out about 18months ago and I still don't think he has it back yet. When it works it's great, when it doesn't it's a ball ache, sorts the men from the boys though, some folk can't cope without an LCD;)

Of course I'm happy to cover any damage and post RMSD, do you have an idea of value?

PM sent as well.

Both ideas here are really great, I love the idea of lending cameras out, to people. I'll edit my list so its got the cameras I still have on it and then see if I can help Arthur too.

Excellent Pepper - I love the idea of more people getting film cameras to play with.

Incidentally, I am posting Nick a FED Mikron after all, the Konica appears to have developed a lazy shutter and as the Mikron is almost a perfect copy of the Eye, Nick will still get the same experience.
