I want to get my new kit insured but who should i go with, are E+L actually alright or are there better?

I've just sorted mine out on my house contents policy, I'm covered for about £6k at no extra charge but for my 1d mkIIN body insured as a single item over £1780 it cost me an extra £36 a year.

but does that cover you for theft from a vehicle or accidetal damage or theft from your person etc?

I'd second adding the costs to home insurance - pay a small amount extra for "personal possessions" & your covered - as always with insurance though make sure you check the smallprint !!

To add to what Irritable_Rabbit said, you can do a search on any photography forum and you will see threads warning people to stay away from E&L.

The two that usually get recommended to go with are either Photoguard or Glover and Howe.

I'm with Photoguard. Not had to make a claim yet but some friends have and said they're pleasant to deal with.
I also have accidental damage cover from Currys, as they pick the camera up and get it back to you in 21 days if it gets damaged, which works for me as I don't have a back up body (yet... hehehe).

IRCC you wont be covered for theft from a vehicle under your home contents insurance, even places like photoguard charge you extra for in vehicle theft.

never had to claim (thank god) so dont know what they're like but ive heard E+L are horendous, your chances of getting money out of them are akin to that fancy trick with the loafs and fishes that that religious dude did actual happening, i.e very very slim!

i just stuck each named item on the household insurance for another £3 a month.

I was looking at that yesterday, there's no excess (unless you want voluntary to reduce premium), but at £34/year for £1500 cover i won't bother with the voluntary excess (£250).

to save me searching through the site, is it new for old and if so, is it for more than 2 years as E+L only cover new for old if camera is under 2 years old.

Also, would it be worth getting a little extra cover than i need, i.e i'll be covering my 30D, 70-200 F/4L, my new sigma 17-70, canon 380EX flash, a cheap 35-80mm lens, lowepro orion trekker (soon to be upgraded) and i was debate £1500 cover, would it be worth going up to £2000 to cover for future upgrades? i.e a macro lens eventually etc.

ummm, just finished reading about E&L here and elsewhere - going to have to change my cover I think - thanks for the heads-up

It depends on your insurer. My kit is covered under my contents policy by Cornhill and they cover personal possessions in cars provided they're in the boot or glove box (and there are no access restrictions a-la E&L). Hiscox are the same although they have a £2500 limit.

I'll be off to Barcelona in 2 weeks time, and i'll bring my nikon gears worth £1.5k. I've yet to insure my gear, I'm wondering is Mondial (easyjet) good enough to cover my trip? It cost £10.50 for 5 days.
