a friend has been looking at the panasonic lumix dmc tz5

i havent heard of them in all honesty but what are they like? or what would people recommend for under £200? must be compact

thanks

The Panasonics are good, but crippled by a small sensor and plenty o' noise at higher ISO's

As a result in good light they produce a very nice shot, but for low light you'll struggle to contain noise.

James

Agreed, I had a similar decision when buying one for my Dad, and went with a Canon SX100IS, not quite as small but much better IQ :)

As ever, "it depends..."

If you're just after a pocketable, good quality camera that will cover the majority of snaps, then I would recommend a Fuji F47fd (available for around £100).

However, it doesn't have the biggest zoom around - so if that is truly crucial then the Panasonic you are looking at should fit the bill.

Lastly, if you want as much control as possible then either a G series Canon or possible even the Ricoh GR are worth investigating - but these are aimed at the Enthusiast market so have far more control available.

Cheers,
James

Well, when I was looking I was comparing the Lumix TZ-3, Canon XS100IS and Sony DSC-H3 - but we were looking for a compact with good zoom.

I really like the Sony, but the low spec LCD let it down for me for reviewing pics, so went with the Canon in the end as I said.
