Hi guys and girls!

My 8 year old daughter loves playing around with my camera - so I was thinking about getting her a camera for christmas.

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a camera for an 8 year old girl????

Thanks in advance,

El Capitano!

I suggest an older bridge camera to keep cost down, I have got my 6 yo lad a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 for crimbo which I feel will be an excellent starter camera, it came with 3 batteries and proper Lumix bag and only cost me £50 quid so not a huge outlay..

my wife has a Kodak Z1012 bridge camera which surprised me how capable it is, and its really small for a bridge camera..

my 8 yo daughter has a Fuji Z20, great for quick snaps, quick vid and blogging, thats about it IMO..

as I say look out for older bridge camera, proper bargains to be had, its not a cheapskate thing its a not spending loads for it to then be left in the cupboard, or any mishaps that damage it..

I'd get a good boxed 2nd hand Sony cybershot (or similar) of ebay .

Should get one for about £40.

My 2 lads aged 4 and 6 have used one for ages.

At this age, you dont want to be getting anything fancy really, just something that will take a picture and is really simple to use.

I dont want to spend lots of money on it, as she me not use it.... also it needs to be quite robust, as I guess it will get dropped, and thrown around alot!

Kids eh....haha.

The Cybershot my kids use got dropped an awful lot. Battled on regardless though. !!

It was one of these :

It will be her first camera, so I think a compact will be fine - main thing is that it is simple to use etc.... and robust.... and not too expensive hehe (credit crunch and all that jazz!).

ahhh, my lad was using an old compact until he started messing around with me and my cameras and wanted something like mine, I thought you were in a similar situation...

what about looking on the fleabay for something like a Canon Ixus 40, should be able to get one cheap and full metal housing if memory serves me well...

Fujifilm Finepix A170 in Blue --- Great for a young girl. It is simple to use, it shoots good quality pics, it looks good (girls :P) and I think due to its design, it could withstand droppes. I would go for that personally, and I would recommend this to you.

You could get this pretty cheaply really looking at about £65 - £85.

Good Luck

I dont know the o/p's financial situation, but £80 - 90 on a brand new camera thats going to get dropped a few times seems like madness to me.

If £80 is loose change, then fair enough.

Argos also have lego camera's for about £40

The Lego camera is rubbish, my granddaughter has one and its pants!

Hence why I'm also looking around for a deal for my kids and grandkids for small robust cameras for them.

My priorities seem to be good battery life and SD card storage, I'm not keen on the other types of storage cards, because I'm trying to keep it as simple as possile for the kids.

Sony Cybershots are always a safe bet, I've had a few Fuji compacts and never had a problem with any of them!

I'd take the risk and buy something second hand. Plenty of bargains to be had!!

I looked at the fisher price one - but thought it looked a bit 'childish' for an 8 nearly 9 year old.....

How about a Kodak Easy Share? Relatively cheap and not too large for small hands?

What about those rugged ones that you see the kid/dog abusing on the advert on TV?

one that uses an SD card and AA batteries...that is probably them all..except this on which is AAA
