Hello Where on the Nikon D3100 can you see how many photos it has actually took in total???

I doubt if you will see it on the actual camera. Normally you need to see it on an exif file, I use Kuso exif viewer (free download). All you do is take a photo and put it on your computer(don't edit the photo), right click over the picture and in the dropdown list you will See open with Kuso "5th one down". Right click on that and at the top of the listing is a box which if ticked gives the full listing of everything about the shot and camera.

Its the best exif viewer one can use

Only for Nikon though... that doesn't work for Canon.

It says aux image no which is a bit confusing. Does it mean the number of images on a memory card or the number of images taken on the camera?Kuso exif show the number of photos the camera has taken which is why I recommended it.

No.. that's the camera's total shutter count.
