Always learning here, so bag also now has Piriteze !

What are your essentials, obviously camera kit but what else do you carry on a trek or day trip ?

Here is a few of mine, Piriteze as mentioned, Gavilast, some Paracetamol, Ashtma inhaler, Extra Strong mints, Gaffer Tape stuck to various things, mainly lens hoods, EDZ windproof ( http://www.edz.biz/edz-innershell.html ) hat, gloves - always have a copy of my PLI, previous media passes, cards, pen, paper, couple of black bin liners, i-pod and headphones.

These are always in, obviously if going up a hill food and drink is included aswell as warm kit, well weather dependent kit - now wonder I have a bad back !

Insurance details, drink, hat, suncream, mars bar, waterproofs, business cards, note pad and pen.

Surely if walking/hiking, a map and compass. Even If I know the area like the back of my hand I take those. Maybe thats the scout leader in me.......

Bloody hell! Sounds like what you also need is a Sherpa.... :D

In addition to the kit (camera + lens)
I'd bring a microfibre cloth, blower, waterbottle, mobile phone (but off if I do not want to be disturbed), spare batteries, more film. :D

up a mountain I took 2litre water bladder, thermal top, waterproof jacket, camera gear (camera, 17-40.24-70,70-200,filter, filter holder, tripod) and a picnic...

if its a trek then usually gloves, warm but light coat. water, snacks, bait (depending on what im shooting) and something to keep my hed warm as well!

Spare batteries
Fags
x2 lighters
More fags
Rain cover
Water
Exidrin (strong migrane pills from the US)
Snickers
Mobile phone turned to 'OFF'

I think I'd need a small van if I added everything mentioned in this thread to what I take

Is there only me with a knife then ???

My dad gave me it 30 years ago - it's a locking pen-knife with a 5" blade, sharp as Hell (used it as main carving knife through Uni ); also has a decent saw on it

Used it loads of times for 'gardening' (removing bits of plants/flowers in the way of a shot), and a hundred non-togging things

Although it's hidden in the depths of my bag - just wondering if I'm actually "Concealing a dangerous weapon" rather than carrying a damn useful (though infrequently so) bit of kit

Oh, and 1st Aid Kit, lots n lots of change for car-parks, etc. in addition to most of that already suggested  No wonder it's so heavy

Until I forgot about it one time and tried to take my camera bag with me on a plane, I too carried a locking knife that is now part of the confiscated items at Heathrow :(

only things i carry other than kit in the box are dinner if i take any, a hand towel (dry hands if its raining) a waterproof coat, business cards and two little fold out stools. cant really fit anything else in, box is pretty full to be honest

I generally take:

A Swiss army knife (where did the phrase come from - have they go an army)
Some freezer bags with elastic bands (instantly weather seals my 40D)
Sticky back velcro pads - never used them but I'm sure they'll be useful on day
Pair of binoculars
lightweight waterproof & a lightweight EDZ windproof fleece
Water, mars bar and maybe some biscuits.

Most of this goes into the upper section of my Explorer 9 rucksack, except the fleece and waterproof that I slide into the laptop pocket.

Switzerland has National Service. There are millions of guns in private homes. The Swiss Army orders an equal amount of swiss army knives from Victorinox and the other company. I watch QI ;)

The most important thing I take with me, so important that I would not leave the house without it. Is the WIFE as she carrys all my stuff.

i allways have at least a leatherman squirt with my keys

far better than a swiss army...

Don't forget the spirit level, boys and girls, just in case your tripod doesn't have one built-in.
Andy.

That happened to me with my trusty Swiss Army Knife.:(

Not a "Swiss Army Wife" I trust??

"Gaffa tape, First Aid Kit of Champions ;) "

Seriously handy stuff, temp fix for open wounds, limb loss and lobbed mobile phones !

I normally have in the back of my car -

My Camera bag with Canon 18-55mm attached to camera and the 70-300mm on stand-by

My tripod in it's own bag so i can just keep it on my back and it doesn't get wet

My old laptop bag with my coat in it and sometimes stick my waterproof in there. Also stick a bottle of coke in there too.

All of my cleaning stuff in the lead of my main camera bag (Rocket Blower - Lens Pen - Optical Wipe)

Going to invest in a beanbag :)

may i ask what country you live in where you would need both items in the same day

On my recent visit to Scotland I could have done with both items by midday :bang:
