I've just read on here about a lucky chap who has just bought a mint condition Bronica SQ. A few weeks ago, a mate of mine bought a Canon 5D (the owner had bought a MKII) and that is in perfect condition too, and actually looks like its never been out of the box.

You see so many cameras on E-Bay and the like that look pretty much unused. Even on TP you see people selling gear with very few shutter activations and very often the kit is hardly used.

I wonder how many people have 'gadget mania' and buy cameras and then don't use them very much? I suspect it's more of us than would like to admit it.

I for one don't do that, but my Dad is the kind of guy that does, he would buy a D300 just for taking the odd photo that a point and shoot would do.

i am a gadget freak i must admit, but i do use my gadgets! i have over a 1200 shots on my D700 and only had it late Nov.

I used to work in a specialist Leica and Hasselblad dealer in Surrey. There was one guy in particular who used to buy cameras and bring them back no less than a month latter and change his mind. He used Hassleblad, Leica, Contax, Nikon and some other makes. He kept the shop running on his trade alone!!

We had a "wants" book and whenever we sold something to him we'd check who wanted to have a second hand one, we had a buyer for the second hand equipment he'd bring back before we sold it to him

Why shouldn't people look after their kit, I look after mine and shoot in all weathers on beach's with all the sand and salt spray, but I look after my kit as I want it to work when I need it.
Its the quality of the image's you take that counts not how many you take. Why shouldn't people use their equipment when and how often they like, after all they paid fot it.

Just my little rant for today :), move on please nothing to see here.

I think with SLRs there is this sad reality when the shots taken with it are not AMAZING- disappointment sets in and the thing sits there.... why carry it if the pictures are "no better" than the PaS.

I am sure there is a good reason T3 magazine runs on ads alone - and I am sure there is a correlation between SLR sales and ebay "for sale barely used" following one of their specials ;)

I agree that if you are going to splash the cash for those pieces of kit then you would expect them to be well used. There has to be a certain number of activations to even try out all of the settings etc.

However each to their own

I agree with you and I think that people should look after their gear and of course they should use it as often or as little as they like. And I don't really think there's anything bad about gadget mania. After all some people collect stamps and pottery and all kinds of stuff. I'm not saying its a bad thing.

But as to your point about its the quality that counts; you are right there too, but its not likely that a person who rarely uses a camera will be particularly competent. So I do think that a lack of use does indicate a lack of interest in taking pictures. :-)

Cameras I buy, then use plenty and when I upgrade I sell on for a realistic price.

Lenses is my weakness. I wrote a list of all the lenses I have owned since I got a DSLR. I was actually quite suprised at how many there were... Some lenses I kept a while, some I sold pretty quick. One I have had for a long time. The bonus of this is I know now what my ideal lens lineup needs to contain and I can work towards that over the coming years.

Bit off topic i know, but when I bought my FireBlade, it was 2 years old and had under 2k on the clock. They guy had traded it for a new one  3 & 1/2 years later and it's still going strong with with over 20k on it.... Some people....

I'm still kicking myself for missing out on what was probably the bargain of the year, an almost unused D300 18-200VR and SB400 flash advertised in the paper, I thought it'd definitely have gone so emailed the seller as it was late when I spotted the ad

I forgot about it then checked my mail a couple of days later, he still had it so I rang straight away to be told someone had picked it up an hour ago

D300 18-200VR SB400 all boxed with receipts £800:bat:

Not uncommon in the cycling world as well as when your fit you make it look so easy.
(they dont see the winters freezing your nuts off putting in the hard graft).
Consequently people watch letour in the summer and think i will have some of that drive down to the nearest trek dealer and splash out 2 grand squeeze there fat swollen feet into a pair of sidis and test to virtual destruction a discovery channel jersey.

At the first railway bridge they go up 10 gears hands a blur with leavers brakes gears to comprehend, the helmet slips over their eyes, the ipod skips a beat and another hardly used bargain appears in the shop window ready for the lads.

Chris, Brad , Vicky, Nichol, i salute you

It's not just gadgets I'm afraid. I know a twenty something girl (scientist she is)(single too):):) who paid 26K, 4 years ago for a Mitsubishi Evo 6 Tommi Mak with 10,000 on the clock. Its now done 12,000 and is like new. serviced every 6 months then back in the garage. And she has no intention of selling.
Or marrying me I'm afraid:shake::shake:;)

Ian.
