Yes
At the moment I'm using a Nikon D600 SLR to record video, which works well but is a big cumbersome thing to cart about sometimes and also not the sort of thing you can drop into the hands of a helpful friend or colleague to 'point and shoot' if you want some film of yourself narrating.

What I need is a compact camcorder capable of fairly professional results that can be used quickly and simply on auto, but gives me the ability to control things like exposure compensation.

1080p HD
Decent stereo microphones with effective wind baffle (or the ability to fit one easily)
Records to memory cards, not tape
Decent battery life (and/or ability to fit higher capacity battery)
A degree of control rather than being fully automatic (manual focus, exposure compensation etc)
Face detection focussing
Reasonably compact
Decent zoom
Easy for anyone to operate on full auto (point and shoot basically)

I know a bit about photography, but little about camcorders. What should I be looking at and are there any other 'must haves'? It's mostly for outdoor action type stuff.

Budget is preferably about £500 but can go higher if needs be.

I'd appreciate any advice, thanks.

Panasonic X920 could fit the bill?

I had a similar dilemma as I didn't want to use my Nikon DSLR for casual stuff. I opted for the Sony A5100 which is a CSC camera but delivers quality video footage and very fast auto focus. If you don't want the faff of another camera to shoot video the Panasonic will do well for you.

I have a panasonic HC-X900M ( not the HC-X900) which takes extrnl mike records to SD card and or intrnl memory. Should come with computer disk as well= Panasonic HD Writer AE4.1
Aso takes stills @16 mb and 3D with adapter and 32gb internal memory

Length 7 inches. extra a 3D adapter = http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-VW-CLT2E-H-Conversion-Lens-Camcorders/dp/B006WTMU4C

And better still within your budget. Mine cost new a fraction under £850 in June 2012

As for your zoom question this might just answer it, second half of video (no extrnl mike)

I did get this to help with holding it

One ot these to raise muffler out of lens view

then a couple of batteries VW-VBN260 for just under 2 hours of video recording time each.

There should be a hand book with it

See there are still a couple new for sale from the USA but don't know if they are pal compatible or not, you would have to ask.

All I would say is I was amazed at the sound and picture quality
