I want to record short clips about, and of, product for upload to utube for my hand made tile website. My son has offered me his Samsung VC-HMX 10 camcorder for this if I want it.

I am also hankering after a 600d and wonder if this would do the job any better or as good.

Any help with what you think would give the best results with minimum learning curve most welcome.

For the quality required for utube the Samsung would be ok and easy to use. The 600d is able to produce much, much better video but this depends on what lens you attach to it, have you already got canon or canon compatable lenses? if so the canon will be great. Sound is surprissingly good staright into the camera, but an external video mic like the rode videomic would be a good addition, depending on what it is your shooting a fast lens like the Canon nifty fifty 50mm f1.8 is a great place to start and can be picked up for £70-£80.

Cheers for that Ben, I have more or less put any new gear on hold till the autumn but will play with the Samsung and upload some stuff to utube and see how it looks. I'm hoping my son will take over the video side of things to be honest but a 600d would be nice:)

No problem Steve, its a great camera but it does open up a world of additional cost with lenses etc. Good luck, all the best

The 600D will be much more difficult to use. To get the best from DSLR video you really need to be using it manually, which is a whole different skillset to stills.

I would stick to the Samsung, especially for videos that are aimed at YT.
