Hi all,

New to the forum and after some lighting advice.

I have been looking at the Calumet GF400 and have some questions regarding how it is triggered. I am currently using Nikon SB-900's off camera and wanted something with a little more punch. My current lights are triggered via radio trigger and just want to know how the GF400 would fit in with my current set-up? Could I simply put another radio trigger on the bottom of the GF, set it manually and crack on or is there a little more to it than that? I have no experience with studio specific lighting so any advice is much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Al

The GF400 is in fact exactly the same thing as the Atom 360. To get the best from it, it should really be triggered by its own remote control, which doubles as a radio trigger.
But there is also a standard 3.5mm jack socket, allowing it to be triggered by your existing radio trigger set.

BTW, this isn't studio specific lighting - it's more a crossover, basically a high powered hotshoe flash but with the ability to use it barebulb, making it much more suitable for softboxes etc.

Thanks for the reply. That's a bit of a nuisance then, so are there any relatively inexpensive portable studio lights that work reliably with a standard radio trigger, i.e. fit onto it's hotshoe?
Thanks

It will work reliably with an ordinary radio trigger, as I explained above. It's just that you'll have to adjust the power manually, i.e. not remotely.

Happy days, is that the same for most studio lights however, the 3.5mm jack? Had a quick look at a few online, bowens etc and none of the descriptions mention it?
Cheers

Unless they mention they have triggers with remote power adjustment, it's safe to assume they haven't. It is quite common now though, so if buying new ones, it's easy to choose ones with remote power control.

OT but I don't get how come you and Calumet quote different power for what is the same light
We quote it accurately, I can't answer for anyone else.

Cheetah and Godox have it as 360 too.
