hey guys,

Im looking at setting up a small studio at home and wanted your input.

I have a canon 450d and a 580 II flash and various lens. But lighting is something I know little about.

On Ebay I came across this package which seems to have something for everything, can you offer any input

hmmm I don't know a great deal about studio strobes, however... that little lots coming from HK... I suspect shipping will be a ton, and if you get stung for import tax its going to get expensive.

I didn't read any make/brand so its hard to judge quality etc... I personally would avoid it like the plague.

go check out what Lencarta/Interfit etc have to offer since they are in the UK and are already well established and get great reviews. You get the bonus of better customer support also in case anything goes wrong, you wont get that from a HK seller.

Hi Dade, well, it's undoubtably cheap! I did nearly fall off my chair laughing when I read that it was ready to take out on that fashion shoot or wedding.

If you compare it to
Bowens
Elinchrom
Lencarta
Interfit
Bron Color

Those are what I would personally rate for that kind of use.

Now for a small studio at home it may well be suitable for that and it could be a very good way of learning. If you do decide it's something you would like to develop you'd probably end up buying something decent.

Also the best way of learning lighting is to start with one light and know what you are doing with that before you add a second. Three might confuse the heck out of the end result :)

At first glance this does look like a good deal, it's everything you need to set up a mini studio but with it coming from the far east you have to be careful. If any of the lights develop a fault then you're going to struggle to claim on the warranty. Also, as has been mentioned there is no brand mentioned so you have no idea what kind of quality you are buying.

You have to ask the question, do you really need 3 lights for a small home studio? Would a 2 light setup be enough. Do you need a softbox or will shoot through umbrellas be fine. Have a look for a better quality second hand kit from a known brand and you will probably get better value for money.

I would defiantly consider a two light set up to begin, forget about the 3rd for now and concentrate on getting the two right. There are many many things you can try with just 1-2 lights, throw in a reflector even. once you have got hold of that you can always add more :)

spend the money you save on a decent light meter :) - you will need one.

buy a two light set as you already have one (580ex) with suitable modifiers that can be used for anything in a home studio... background light, hairlight etc. "Flashinthepan" sells good softboxes to fit on here too...
