I've got my hands on a Coolscan V. After setting it up, I've discovered an error message which rears its head every now and then

"The scanner has reported a hardware error. Please reset the scanner by switching it on and off. If this does not work, please contact your local Nikon Service or Support Office"

I haven't yet encountered any difficulties with scanning?!

Is the unit faulty or is this a bug in the error message system? (ie has anyone else had this and found it to be bogus)

Is there a number behind the error?

Never had it with my Coolscan 3

Nope, there's no number behind the error.

It occasionally pops up when i click 'calibrate' but I'm under the impression that it IS calibrating as I can hear motor activity. The scans seem fine?!

Had a Coolscan V and got exactly the same problem myself. It's a known fault (do a google search) and does not effect the quality of the scans. As you know if you ignore it, the sacnner will operate faultlessly

It doesn't bother me if the message pops up and it works (which it does). I'm just worried about the potential resale value - I intend to flog it when I've done my scanning, although nobody will want to buy a scanner that flashes error messages :shake:

I've just discovered that the SA21 (film strip) adaptor does NOT cause an error message (or green flashing light) to occur......so it's the MA21 slide adaptor that is the problem..........?

I've just bought a coolscan V and have the very same problem: a hardware message error only with the slide adapter. However the scanner works fine.
Is yours still working?
Sorry to ask you, but I'm deciding if to send it for repair or not.

Thank you!

I wouldn't bother if it's scanning ok.

This seems to be a common 'fault'

Is this error only seen with Nikonscan??

Has anyone tried any 3rd party software such as Vuescan or Silverfast?

David
