We have a week booked in a lodge at newtonmore from the 16th april. Not entirely sure what we will get to see as its a family holiday, hoping to see

crested tit
capercaille
ptarmigan
red squirrel
golden eagle
sea eagles too and what ever else we come across, are there any particular "good" spots for these?

Thanks in advance.

Getting late for cresties coming to feeders but they are still around but go higher in the trees from now. Capercaillie is a big no no as its their leaking season starting now. ptarmigan are starting to change plumage but can still be seen higher up. Red Squirrels are fine as is the white tail and golden eagles as long as it's at a distance and they aren't disturbed.

Thanks for the info.
Any hides anywhere that would allow viewing without disturbing ?

Caper watch is ok if you want distant views but not for photography. Have look at the area tour staying as there will be loads of small birds etc to photograph in the area. Pine Martin can be hard to get during daylight hours unless they are fed at regular intervals and get used to people being around.

The hills to the west of Newtonmore (driveable) are good for deer, if you follow the "road" to the end.

I live in Aviemore, and it is a funny time for wildlife photography, kinda between seasons, I will add please be careful looking for Capercaillie, or I would advise don't look for Capercaillie, this time last year a photographer was charged with disturbance of a schedule 1 species, he was lucky to get to keep his car.
The RSPB are monitoring all the Lek sites from now until August.
While you will find some wildlife to photograph its just not the best of time, take some walks up Cairngorm and the surrounding areas and i'm sure you will get some worthwhile images.
Cheers Gordon.

This is also a nice walk Loch an Eilein and Loch Gamhna and not far from the above.

Thanks for the links, cakes sounds good :)

Thanks Gordon, as for capercaillie if we see one then that will be a bonus, we have a mountain safari booked with highland safaris, will be interesting to see what we can see.

Hi Michael23,
I had to Google them, I see they are in Perthshire and nowhere near the Cairngorms, Perthshire is really nice and you never know what you will come across, but it looks like a deer farm with an Owl, lol.
Cheers Gordon.

My wife's done the booking for it, I thought we were going further up country, but it appears not, should be a great experience either way going up the highest mountain in Perthshire in a landrover.

Hi Michael,
Im sure it will be a good experience and like I say Perthshire is a beautiful part of the world, have fun and you never know what wildlife you might find.
Thanks Gordon.
