Anyone going to Cadwell on the 7th for the Alan Healy Memorial Rally?
Going to have my first go at motorsport photography so any general tips greatly recieved! I'll be scouring the net for advice too.

Will a 80-210mm f/4.5-5.6 lens be suitable and will I stand a chance of some good shots without a tripod?

Will post in Feedback and Critique after the weekend

Firstly Mike have you been to Cadwell before?

I am not sure of the actual stage layouts, but I do know it 100% sealed surface. It looks like a good entry and being Cadwell you should be able to get close. If you are looking at doing some panning shots then you are likely to get better results without the tripod.

I've just been this weekend for the time attack and took my 70-210 with me found it best using that lens at gooseneck and Mansfield corners where the track is very open

At Mansfield I also managed to catch a few cars popping flames as they feared down for the hard left

Most people go to mountain and take pictures of the cars going up there and coming over the crest but you will find it easier with a shorter lens like a 70mm max as its very close to the action I used my kit lens there

However it all depends on what track they are using in the day be it the long or short I can post a few images I got later if you like and the names of the corners I got them

Not been to Cadwell before but have looked up a few pictures on the net so have a bit of an idea about what to expect.
It's my mates first rally in his Escort Cosworth so though he might appreciate a bit of support and (hopefully) some shots of him in actrion.

Will probably just take all my kit and see how it goes.
I've been reading tips on motorsport photography so will make a few notes to help keep me on track.

From what I have seen I suspect they will be using the mountain (along with most of the track) in both directions during the day. So you should be able to get some different shots from the same location(s)
