Hi Sharpman,
The Hahnel remote shutter release HRC 280 works on the Canon 40D, it does AF, shutter release, lock-in continuous shutter release and 'bulb' exposure.
I've got one and it has an extension which changes it from a 0.8m to a 2.8m cable (so for astronomy I can sit in the car with the cable through the window).
£20 from LCE about a year ago.
(also works on various Pentax)

I bought a TC-80N3 timer-remote cable release from ebay for £16. It's the knock-off Chinese version of the Canon TC-80N3 which costs £100+ and it does exactly what it says on the tin (i think it's exactly the same as the canon to be honest) - time lapse being the main advantage over a standard remote. So no need to link up to a laptop or buy an expensive battery grip for time lapse stuff and plus if it's raining you can just get the rain cover on and tuck it underneath.

it also acts as a standard shutter release
