im looking at buying a new phone at present i have an samsung note 4
its been a great phone and the picture quality is really good
im looking at the newer version note 9 or the huawei p20 pro
does anyone have either of these phones and whats there good and bad bits ?

The bad bits? How about the price of buying a new phone? For that price you could probably get a used Canon 6D full frame body with 6 to 12 months warranty, and that will take much better photos than a phone! So perhaps bear than in mind before getting swept up in marketing/keeping up with the Joneses. Ask yourself honestly what your old phone can't do that a new one could.... then ask yourself is it honestly worth the price of a new Canon L lens to buy one?

If the battery on your existing phone is giving out, or the screen and/or case is scruffy/cracked than get some quotes for a refurb and weigh up the cost of that against a new one. Bearing in mind that the new one will be 'old hat' in 12 months time too!

I’d not get the Note 9 because it’s hardly different to the Note 8, but more expensive. You’ve chosen 2 quite different phones too. How did you narrow it down to those 2?

I have a Note 9 and absolutely love it. Hands down the best phone I've ever had, and the camera quality is excellent. I find photos from the Huawei phones very over processed, and the portrait mode makes people look like cardboard cut outs. Portrait mode on the Note 9 is actually not too bad, and having the two cameras (26mm and 52mm focal length equivalent) is great. Samsung's software is much cleaner than Huawei's now and the performance is excellent. Battery life is insane too, last weekend I went from 09:30am on Saturday to 13:00 on Sunday off the charger and still had 35% battery remaining.

A few camera samples, all straight out of the camera with no additional processing

Edit: the S-Pen on the Note is very handy for doing quick edits in Lightroom mobile

I have to say my old note 4 also has a very good camera for a phone.
I took it solely on a week last year to Greece just and it provided some great images, I think the thing is with good light camera phones are ok.
But add in bad light and then the processing in the phone takes over to much for me.

I have the Pixel 3 and it’s an amazing camera really but as has been said low light they struggle a tad.
The original file was too large for the forum!
