Crop an image in half you have affectively doubled your focal length and still have a more than adequate 12mp prints.
So would you suggest the D3200 then ...I am upgrading from D40 and want to make sure I get the best camera and not to have to upgrade for a few years....
Yes the d7000 is a better camera i'm not saying otherwise, just informing them that it has the same sensor for half the price. They can make an informed decision on what's important to them. As for the cheap plastic construction i think it doesn't feel cheap not like canon models and the d7000 is half plastic too. I for one prefer a small lighter body however i would like some more function buttons. You will be magnifying lens defects by a factor of 2x though.. it's not as clear cut as you think. Sometimes you have no choice if you don't have a long enough lens, but it's not something I'd PLAN for when purchasing a camera.
The D5100 also has the same cheap plastic construction and one command dial manual operation of the D3200 though, but is only 16MP. 16MP is absolutely fine, but if you're going for a lower end Nikon to save cash I'd be tempted to get the 3200.
My money would be on a D7000 though.
