Hi, im looking at buying my first SLR and im thinking of getting a second hand Canon 350d. Its a camera body only so I will also be looking for a lens. What would be a good starter lens to get me going? It needs to be reasonably priced too because im on a tight budget!

Thanks in advance for any input.

Paul

Can you give us some idea of your budget for a lens:shrug: also some idea of what sort of photography you are looking to do?

i'll probably be looking to spend £50 - £100 on a second hand lens.

I travel quite a bit and enjoy taking photos when im away (i guess this is a bit of a broad statement?). I'm also into my classic VW's and take pictures at the car shows. I also surf and would like to take some surfing shots.

I imagine it's quite hard to find one lens to do everything but as im new to it all i just want something that will allow me to learn how to take pictures. Hopefully i can spend more money in the future!

Well I'm affraid in your budget there isn't really one lens that will do everything you want:nono:

But all is not lost....a new Canon 50mm 1.8 can be had for just over £50 and is a lovely lens for portrait's and a bit of landscape photography...it's also very good in low light. You could team it up with a 55-200mm either from Sigma or Tamron which would give you some extra reach for your surfing photos...they can both be had for around £50 second hand:thumbs:

If you can spare another £25-30 you should be able to pick up a kit lens on ebay 18-55mm which will give you a wider option should you need it;)

My ex has a sigma 28-300 on her 10d and while it's not the greatest quality in the world is it bloody versatile, light and would cover the stuff you've mentioned.

It's said that money spent on good glass is never wated but it does make sense to get something to get going with. At least that way you'll have an idea of what range you use most if you wanted to upgrade to something better.

Thanks for the advice, sounds like the sigma 28-300 could be the one to go for. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a bargain!
