Yes
hi everyone
a naive question i'm sure! but hopefully i won't get shot down in flames ;)

i'm off to the US for a holiday soon, and was wondering what the deal is with buying any kit for my camera (D90) while i'm out there... lenses, etc.

things that immediately spring to mind are customs, warranty...

Nikon lenses have worldwide warranty fyi.

Pretty much as long as you don't try take it back all boxed up then no one will bat an eyelid. I managed to get a snare drum home from the states in hand luggage. Though that was 3/4 years ago :) Camera and lenses should be easy, just take a camera bag with spaces to fill. If you want to keep the cases, just flat pack them and put them in the bottom of your suitcase!

or post the boxes back to yourself - as boxes in your luggage is somewhat damning...

hehe yes!

does 'duty free' sell camera lenses, etc... at the airports (Gatwick) for good/better prices?

not sure how US prices compare anyway? :)

Ignore the naive comments on disposing of/flatpacking boxes and read these threads.

You'll be lucky to get anything cheaper at the airport shops, and then not by much. Again you need to read the above threads on import duties. Cheaper US prices - maybe, but often pretty much the same as here. Swings and roundabouts when taking import duties and warranty problems in to account.
