Buying first flash

Ok I'm on the market for a new flash, but I don't intend buying Canon when the third party makes are so good.

Don't mind buying from abroad either, but I wish it to be set as commander so its able to control other flashes if/when I get ones for slaves iyswim?

I know there's quite a few options to choose from, so can anyone recommend a couple that do what I'm asking?

Yongnuo 560II or 565, or something else for similar money?

Seems strange for such a job to be left out of their flashes? Only Canon ones can act as master then?

May be best concentrating on a good slave flash and triggers ATM...

No, the Nissin 866 can act as Master, as can several others, including some Sigma and some Metz.

If you think that's tricky, wait till you start to think about wireless ETTL triggers, where they are priced from cheap to ridiculous and they all have some functionality missing (including the latest Canon system that doesn't allow 2nd curtain sync).
 
Ah ok, thanks. Got confused there a bit.
