Im looking to buy my first flash for my Nikon d5100 .Im still very much on the learning curve of photography but would like a flash you can bounce off the ceiling /walls and when I get more confident experiment with it more .
The 2 I have got my eyes on are the jessops 360afd and the yongnuo yn-560 ( either the mark 2 or 3 ) .Not sure what the difference is on the yn560 2 or 3 though .
I don't want to spend a fortune on my first flash as I might not use it much . I notice the afd360 has ttl but not really understanding the advantages of this . So ,what do you reckon would be the best beginner flash for me or are there others to consider .As you can probably tell I don't really no that much about flashes so please excuse all of the above if I sound clueless ,thanks.

Si,

As you said, the differences are that the Jessops flash has through the lens metering i.e. the camera tells the flash what to do based on your program setting i.e. manual, auto, AV etc. In all fairness, I would suggest the Yongnuo, this is because it's a full manual flash which requires you to enter your own settings (which will help you more in the long run instead of relying on the camera to suggest the settings)
The difference between the MK2 & MK3 yongnuo is literally the addition of wireless triggering built in, basically if you fancy a bit of off shoe flash work then it can be quite handy to place the flash elsewhere. Entirely up to you what you would prefer but for the time being I would suggest the MK3 to give you that extra ball to play with further on.

I've had a 560 Mk1 for a couple of years now. Still going good. You can fire it off cam using your camera's CLS/pop up flash. Just set the onboard flash to '--' so it doesn't effect the shot. You can also buy cheap yongnuo hot shoe cords, at varying lengths, so you can hold it off cam still using the hot shoe to fire.

It's manual control flash, but really, you get used to that very quick. I find even with my Sb900, TTL can be a little off, especially when bouncing the flash or using diffusers. SO I use that in manual mode too.

thanks for the replies .
I will do a bit more research on the flashes and look at the basics of manual flash but I am leaning towards the 560 III .

dont young nuo do a flash with ttl?, i think for ease of use manual the 560 is the one id get.

ttl is nice to have, my metz is ttl and has other auto stuff, pretty much bang on when ive used it :), face rollingly easy :p
but it has to few buttons to be a good manual flash :\

i think the jessops 360 is considered abit "meh" also ?

I will do a bit more research...
No need! I've been *everywhere* and the choice *is* the 560-III :D

Trapped in custom at the moment though...

Don't forget a pair of RF-603 and a cable for camera...
