.. hey guys,
as some of you may be aware i still am yet to have a Dslr.

ill be getting one soon and am torn between the nikon D50 and D80. my wallet says d50 but my heart says d80. i know if i get the d50 ill be wishing i would have gone for the better option a few months down the line,,.,.

my photography is only and a basic level, in fact i still dont know what all the ISO, f numbers etc mean so i got a bit of reading to do i think.

im swayed toward the nikon mainly because i have a f65 with lenses, although i will be getting new lenses with the dslr. and my dad uses a d50 and i like the feel of it,m but ive never had any experiance with a canon.

what are you opinions on the d80?

also i will be in need of a decent macro lens. with a nice zoom to about 200-300mm .
i will use the kit lens too and just run with 2 lenses for the time being so am after a good all rounder second lens, any advice into which to get for around £200? maybe a sigma???

thanks in advance.

hope this post makes sense, im in a bit of a rush as im at work!:bonk: ... gtg

hang on, you didn't mention the Canon 400D or 30D or anyother canon

no i didnt, because ive not even looked at the canon range tbh, ive only been looking at nikon, im a bit of a nikon man. but not really knowing too much about it all, i dont know why.... i think its just because ive used nikons and own a nikon but never even touched a canon.

Thats fine, I am taking the mick. I have always used Canon's

and what made you choose canon over nikon??
there always seems to be a little rivalry between the two brands, are they pretty much the same?
is there things one can do that the other cant? or one brand excels in and the other doesnt?

its all very confusing...

What's behind the camera is more important than the camera itself ;)

Standard advice is go to a shop and hold the different makes and models and see which feels right for you. The Nikon owners will be along some time soon to advise on benefits of one Nikon model over another.

Nikon users get to enjoy a smug feeling of superiority.

Canon users get to enjoy actually being superior.

Seriously though, they both have areas where they are better than the other but are pretty much the same. There is not much you need to know about a Canon, the buttons may be in a different place (which may be an important consideration) but you still just set an ISO, aperture, and shutter speed and press a button. If you already have a set of lenses you will continue to use than that is a big reason for staying with one brand, but if starting from scratch then there is no general reason to pick one of the other, it comes down to particular needs and preferences in your choice of camera.

Michael.

ok, thanks for your replys so far guys.

just had a very brief look on warehouse exspress. and within budget i would be deciding on either the nikon d80 or the canon 400d.

as mentioned above i have a twin lens package that came with my nikon f65 but would ideally prefure to start a fresh.
so i would buy a camera with the standard kit lens then get myself a macro telephoto lens.
out of those two cameras is there much between them?
and also, which would be the best all rounder lens for me to look into?

cheers

Matt

As has been said earlier - no comparison for actually getting yourself into a shop and having a play about with what's on the market. Have a read of some of the magazines offering reviews too - there are stacks of reviews being done at the moment with it coming up to Christmas so you should get a good overview of the features of one over another.

Canon and Nikon tend to get the most exposure as they are the market leaders, but there are plenty of other makes out there worth considering and if you're not already tied to a system........

Matt, before you buy any DSLR get to a shop, Jessops will do, and get them into your grubby paws.

A camera should feel comfortable in the hands and the controls should feel intuitive, you don't want to be looking up at the controls while composing a shot.

I have a D50 and it is a super camera for the money but if the D80 had been around a year ago I think I would have gone with that.

The Canon 400D has a sensor cleaning system that will prove very useful for keeping the old dust bunnies off the CMOS sensor inside it.

Ultimately it is your choice and no one on here can make your decision for you so take your time and choose the one that feels right to you. :)

I use a D50 and I love it. My gf's Dad got a Canon EOS 400D and I have to be brutally honest - I'm not impressed. The size feels awkward, the lack of LCD display is crazy, the kit lens is average at best and - of course - I'm a Nikon user so if your a Canon user the above would apply if you picked up a Nikon. ;p

At the risk of repeating others you need to get your hands on some gear! - best advice I was given & for me I preferred the feel of Nikon which most agree is a bit chunkier certainly in the D50 v 350D when I was choosing ...
The D80 has some extra features above the D50 but the D50 is an extremely good choice at that price - be sure to check current prices on www.camerapricebuster.co.uk before you hand over your wallet & remember this is only the start of it - you'll soon be back looking for lenses / bags / tripods / filters / post production software ... you get the picture
Paul ;)

thanks guys, some helpfull advice there..

as for the extra, i already have a nikon bag, hoya skylight filter , cobra tripod , mini tripod, PScs and nikons PP editing software, so dont need to bare that into mind too much, will just be after a decent all rounder zoom lens with macro, maybe a sigma 28-300 or the like

nikon for me at the entry level slrs, canon make superb pro cameras but i just don't like the feel of the little ones.

i have a d70 and love it. a friend has the d50 and i was very very very impressed with it but i would miss the extra features the d70/d80 has over it. for example, wireless flash and an extra wheel for aperture- just makes life easier.

resolution wise the d80 is huuuuuuuge and you will be able to crop more for sure. however, i have got great a2 pics from my 6 mega pix d70.

the other thing to consider is lenses, the nikons tend to come with better lenses as a rule. that's not to say canon don't make good lenses it's just they don't see fit to supply them with a camera, i'm guessing for cost reasons. the d70 came with an 18-70 which i think is an option with both the d50 and d80, it's a superb little lens which will astound you again and again even when you have 'much better' glass. there's also the 18-135 in the d80 kit, i've not used that one so can't comment, but have a read on the 'net.

for me i'd go d80 for the focusing and extra flash functions and wheel but don't fret if you can't afford it, the d50 is a cracker.
