I've been asked to help someone find a fairly decent compact digital camera. Mainly what she needs it for is taking photos from which to do paintings. Consequently it needs a fairly good zoom range and allow close-ups, although nothing extreme. Preferably a good quality lens, at least 6 megapixels resolution and be fairly simple to use.

I was thinking a Sony Cybershot or something (I'm just about to have a look for myself) but wondered if anybody has any recommendations. She's looking to spend a couple of hundred quid.

Thanks.

Fuji either the S6500 or S9500 or S9600 all really good cameras, simple to use, but have a lot of features.

The Kodaks do well I believe too, trouble is these days there are so many models that change so often it's hard for anyone to keep up.

This forum is always good to get advice, but also might be worth a browse in the 'what camera buying guide' as they will compare a few and state good / bad points. Although the mag is only £3.99, it would only take a 5 min review standing in WH Smith...........keeps me away from the top shelf!

also looking into getting a point and shoot, mainly for things like family meals out and taking friends to ice rink, the beach, places where you would not want to leave DSLR laying around, or places where there is no need to have a camera and loads of lenses, looking to spend around

Thanks for all the advice. Somebody else I know has recommended the Canon A640 and A620. So much choice!

If you are going to spend £150 on the above ones why not chuck another few quid in & go for the Canon Ixus 800IS (yes it does have IS) for £191 here?
Paul ;)

i recently bought a canon ixus60, its not quite got the zoom you want but its tiny, fits in my pocket and appears very rugged as its all metal. cracking IQ as well :)

Over the weekend bought a Casio Pink for wife. 7.2 Mpix, 3x zoom anti shake. So far so good. 149.99 @ boots. Also came with nice leather pouch like a purse.

I have a Nikon L6...well pleased with it and batteries last 1000 pictures...this pic taken sitting in the car in a lay by up in the Highlands on the A9 thought it might show what the camera is capable of ....I'm no expert though !
