Hi

I have an R5 and a RF 100-500 L lens. I am happy with this but on occasion I'd like more reach ( of course ! ) Should I stick on a 1.4EX or use a R10 for the occasions I need this?

There isn't much of a price difference and although it doesn't have weather sealing or the handling of the R5, I'm veering towards the R80 option as IQ should be reasonable and with no loss of light, given the already meagre aperture of my lens. What say you?
 
With 45Mp you can drop heavily and still have an image similar to the 24mp image from the R10 or R8, so your not gaining anything apart from a new toy.

If you need more reach and you need 45Mp images, then either a longer lens or a teleconverter, and accept the compromises that brings.
 
I've not done the maths to work out whether a R10 at 24mp is more or less than a R5 image cropped to the same dimensions, but the other to consider, if you really needed this would be an R7.
 
I believe the R5 cropped is 15mp so a lot fewer pixels on the bird. Mind you the 800mm f11 might be another viable option especially as it’s for only occasional use. The downside is space though. Either that or the R7 adds a fair Bit of weight to the bag
