(Beginner) This is the first butterfly I have taken - think its a Peacock butterfly. The only thing I'm not to happy with is that the background of the shot looks a bit 'busy'. View attachment 19228

It is a peacock, and for a first attempt not all bad. Butterflies aren't always the easiest of subjects. Especially if they're in the sun like this one, if you let a hint of a shadow fall over them, they're off. Also, and particularly if they're in sun, the way some of their colours work result in the camera 'seeing' them differently to the way your eye does. Peacocks are one species that can look very garish in a photograph. I'm sure someone who knows about these things could explain the reason for it. With butterflies it helps to get in as close as you can without disturbing it but from an angle such that the butterfly is 'flat'. Then you stand a much better chance of getting as much of the butterfly in focus as possible, while throwing the background a little out of focus. As with all wildlife, focus on the head. Keep practising. When among all the rubbish you get the odd cracking shot it's well worth it. There are any number of good books that will help with the initial ID, then a search on internet images will confirm it (or not!).

Thanks Jan. I was a bit surprised when I saw it as where I live you don't see these sort too much and I probably rushed the shot - not that you have a lot of time as you don't know when it will move. It is quite garish colour wise and with the background being quite colourful too I just felt it was a bit too much. Will keep at it. :)
