I am after a bit of advice relating to a so called business.

My friend rang me one night the other month and said "I have bought an Established Business" ok fair enough, nice one. after a little chat etc he bought an ebay ready made business, gaurentee-ing Page1on google and customers buying.

After he paid his 99p he had to go through steps of domain purchasing, there hosting, amazon marketplace stuff, google adsense, which would be plastered on there so called ready made site.

He has to pay £10 a month over 2 years for hosting and hasn't made a sale as they suggested. and they say its £100 to leave them.

He emailed them and they said you need to drive business and sent him to there admin page which required more money with these one page websites offering the world and stardum. He understands buinsess doesn't come on a plate and requires you to find it but that wasn't what the ebay add said. no money has been made, no custom and no page1ongoogle either. hmm to me this sounds like a scam.

I personally have done some delving in the business who sells these and found they not a registered uk business and there address relates to a tv production company who don't seem to relate to any part of this ebay stuff.

Any advice before my friend stops paying them.

what does he (not) sell? only sensible advice I think is to stop paying. I can't see any come back

Moved to OOF as unrelated to photography

After he paid his 99p .

I must apologise for bursting out laughing at that point :)

your friend should have done what you ahve now done and investigated... I would stop paying and write it off as a bad experience...

Don't worry, lol. i thought the same, i know millionairs etc have purchased large companies for that kinda money but thats after they put loads in.

this Guy sorry business hasn't got any come back has he?

If it was advertised as an established business then they have no comeback because that is not what he bought. The domain was only registered in January which makes it remarkably new - and there is no chance this company can deliver 'page one results' for him.

Google results are based on a lot of different variables - but one of the main things they use is the number of links to a site from elsewhere. This, along with having a good knowledge on what web searches you want to appear under will get you in the top three pages. After that you just have to have masses of good content on the site.

They charge the initial 99p to (i'm assuming here) get your credit/debit card details.
They can then take any cancelation charges from that card they choose.

Its perfectly legal for them to do that under the terms he probably signed for.

We had a similar problem with a well known studios in Manchester, they took an
initial 99p off my daughters card to book a make-over and photoshoot.
She was then made redundant and wouldnt have been able to afford to purchase
any photographs.

We tried to cancel in good time to avoid wasting their time and ours but they
quoted £130 cancelation fee that they would take off the card. So we ended
up canceling her card and wasting four hours of everyones time..

My only advice is to cancel the card he originally paid with...

As Rob says, cancel the card it was bought with and once they start hassling for money advise them you are taking this up with a solicitor as they havent kept to their part of the bargain and I am pretty sure they will back down, if not it may be worth the £100 to get rid of them

it is a good point, i personally do SEO and get paid for it, and it can take months/years to be really seen if you are a newbie domain. considering my mates know what i do they never ask. lol.

So if post a link of the ebay add could some one check it over before i tell my mate to remove payment details. he pays with paypal.

Don't police stations these days have internet fraud officers?

Bit daft IMHO to sign up in the first place with out doing the research...

From that advert alone it states "Guarenteed To Make you money in 30 days or you pay nothing" If I was in his shoes and he has done everything they have asked I would be dropping them an email stating that he will be taking them up on their offer of paying nothing and therefore asking for the money he has spent back otherwise in effect he will have spent something...

Not the best written post but in the middle of hell in the office...

thank you. i know how it feels with the office from Hell. lol. i will have a good chat with him this evening.

Hope all goes well, if he wants a guarenteed established company which promises to show a return after 30 days please send a cheque to me for an indiscrimantely large amount of money where I will then promise to send a Disc with Flash/Dreamweaver and a few other Http apps and some pretty pictures and a word document on how ot put them all together
