There's an appeal to raise funds to built Babbage's Analytical Engine. A recognisably modern computer, when it was designed in the 1830s it was so far ahead of its time it couldn't be built. It still hasn't been built but now there's an attempt to do so - if they can raise funds.

There's a call for individuals to pledge £10, EUR10 or $10 by 31 January 2011 in order to get this off the ground. Almost 4,000 people have signed up but 6,000 are still needed.

Could you pledge? Could you 'spam' all your nerdie and techie friends? If this were to go viral it may not be too late!

I've signed - will you?

Difference engine and analytical engine are different. The analytical engine was more advanced.

Ah! My tiny mind only registered Babbage and engine - missed the analytical part completely.
