Bug.... Bloody Big Bug!

Chris @Cobra or anyone else,

What on earth is this?

This "bug" decided to harass me in my garden this afternoon and scared the sh!t out of me! :(

It eventually landed on my fence, it could fly, was about 2 inches long, fat and had one massive stinger in it's tail!

What is it??

Looks a bit "dumpy" to me, but it could be the angle. The size is about right so possibly a (one of the) wood wasps possibly the "giant wood wasp" and that "Stinger" is an ovipositor ( egg laying probe)

Bloody this chased me around my garden trying to land on me :(

I also didn't fancy finding out exactly what the pointy thing was either

Yes similar to your image, from looking at other images I say you are spot on in your ID

It was big and fat though, nasty thing!
