Buffalo linkstation - data recovery?

Hmmmm, not a happy bunny!

Have backed up most essential items and files apart from music but managed to knock over the NAS drive last night and now its saying bad sectors and is in em mode i11 - 1 long amber 1 short amber flash.

Unable to update FW without asking for new partition which wipes the lot.

Before I do this I would like to see if I can get some of the music off there any idea how I can access itor recover data?

Has been talk of removing the HD then using usb caddy fix partitions but this is well beyond me I think

Any ideas folks?
 
See my thread about damaged sectors on a hard drive, it's not beyond you I'm sure, I'm using a £7.99 caddy from pc world and photo rec freeware to recover data at the moment, only thing that took a few minutes to get my head round was the command line interface
 
Most data I have but juggling it will now be a prob. Mainly ripped all my music to nas to use flac with sonos, backed this up at start but not since.

Is the whole thing now dead? Ie if I wiped added new partitions is it still ok? Or if I took hd out can I shove another in the nas box and it work the same way?
 
If its saying it had bad sectors I would follow buffalos instructions for recovering the disks rather than pulling the disks out.


Personally I would always bin a hard drive that has bad sectors as they can snowball.

It's a chicken n egg situation can't update FW as per buffalo as it can't find partition, can do this but would need to wipe the lot.

If I take it out I may be able to use something called ufs or somthing but would need to sort an enclosure and fix the partitions myself I know nothing of this.

Also now making me consider what to do in future (typical as this was the move to mac day andi knocked over nas as linking)
