A friend of mine is looking for a student kit for his daughter for college. He was going to spend about £300, I'm a bit out of touch with cameras currently available. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Without being facetious, what's it got to do? All rounder, macro, sports, portraiture?

I'd grab a 20D and spend the rest on lenses. If very lucky you might grab a used 17-70
Sigma which is an awesome lens.

If its a student kit it most likely needs to be an all rounder.

First find out whether the university or college uses Nikon or Canon, then buy the same make. That way she will be able to borrow their lenses, flash guns etc.

A Nikon D3100 kit? The price has gone down a bit now, hasn't it? Or the equivalent of Canon? 20D is a good camera, I have the 30D but can't seem to get rid of it for money or love. If they just want it for kicking around, then a newer models like the D3100 would be better suited I think.

If you're very lucky you might be able to get a 550d with a kit lens second hand for around that. Absolutely amazing camera for the money

I think you really need to know what's required and from that you can make a short list. For example video is on the rise these days and no doubt will be more so in the future and if it's a requirement some of the cameras mentioned here are simply a non starter.

+1 for wait and see what you actually need. Also would suggest getting same brand as the college, so you can borrow stuff like lenses or accessories easier. :)
