My 18-55mm kit lens (Nikon) has stopped zooming.:bang: It has been catching a little for a week or two but has now pretty much locked up at the 55mm end.
So a couple of questions :
1. Is it worth getting repaired?
2. If not is there a lens out there that is sharper and covers wide angles (eg 12mm ish) up to 55mm (ish)

Budget for a new one is about £300 to £400.

Cheers All

Andy

i will sell you a 12-24 for 400 lol

that aside, i use a Sigma 24-40 (not as wide as the 12mm you want) but ifor the price its a cracking little lens

the others that are a possibility are a Sigma 17-70 F2.8 or a Nikon 17-55 F2.8

you buy mine (it has bigger numbers) and i will buy whitey's (i like small numbers) and every one will be happy.

Definately not worth fixing especially given your budget, I'd consider a sigma 17-70 they make excellent walk about lenses or maybe there 17-50 2.8 if your after something faster!

.

i'll sell you mine for 400.

I'll swap you :D

Some food for thought there. I was thinking of the Tokina 12-24mm before this happened. I have got a nifty fifty and a 55-200mm so I'm not sure whether to stick to the original plan or sacrifice a bit of wide.

Hi andy, have you tried to clean it? I had a similar problem with one of my zoom lenses in the past and it turned out that it just needed some cleaning. I zoomed the rear lens element back into the lens and gave the inside a few blasts with the rocket blower. I found this helped to dislodge whatever was causing the lock-up. But you have to be careful with the nozzle not to touch anything inside the lens.

I'll give it a go but it does seem locked up solidly.
