Hi all

Bad news
Last week I was taking a shot with the kit lens (18-55mm) and camera error kept on being displayed, took lens of and heard a rattle, seconds later a couple of plastic bit fell out of lens and now its crunching when i turn the focus ring

Good News
I need to get a new lens! Something that can do all that the kit lens did but with more sharpness and better for landscape photography as this is what i tend to enjoy most. At some point in the future i may go full frame so I've toyed between buying an L lens. However the capabilities of the lens change significantly with the cropped sensor. So my question would be what would a good lens be to suit the following requirements:

  • Suitable for landscape photography
  • Potential to fit full frame
  • under £500
  • Very sharpe
  • Solid build (possibly weatherproofed)
Any tips are very much appreciated!

Anth

Him you mean? Not sure how good a picture he takes but he's definitely sharpe...

Don't buy a full frame lens for this unless you plan to switch very soon!

How wide is wide to you? If your happy with what you had look for a second hand canon 17-55mm f2.8 it's tack sharp and versatile on a crop. If you want a little wider consider a 15-85mm canon great all rounder. If it's really wide go canon 10-22mm it's probably the sharpest of the ultra wides.

I'd look second hand what ever you go for then you will loose very little if you go FF and sell them on.

Cheers Alex. I fancied something a bit wider that 18-55mm but simlar at higher end (55mm). i have 55-250 and a 50mm prime and an 8mm fisheye so wanted to ensure I cover the full range of options.

What about the tamron 17-50 f2.8? Since I have bought that lens for my nikon d90 it is always on the camera.

I had the Tammy 17-50 and it was on my camera all the time until some thieving oik stole my camera and said lens attached.

It wasn't me... Sorry to hear about your loss..

I can't agree with A1ex. I had DX cameras for years and have always bought FX lenses safe in the knowledge that at some point I would go full frame, which I now have. IMHO DX lenses don't hold their value as well as FX and so any sale if you went full frame would not get you as much cash towards your FX jobbies. Downside of FX lenses though is that it is difficult to get a good, wide angle because of the 1.5x mag of an FX lens on a DX camera but it does turn an FX telephoto into a long telephoto.

Personally, I'd buy FX so I would be ready for the switch when it eventually—and inevitably—came. Of course I am a little biased since that is exactly what I did.

Addendum:

Now just to complete the picture I have to make a confession which is not going to help you decide. You see when I finally bought my D810 I realised I had spent so much money that I might as well go the whole way and replace my smaller prime FX lenses with a professional zoom and bought the 24-70mm f2.8; I gave my old 50mm f1.4 to my wife and sold my 28mm f1.8 in part-ex.

Hmmm, so perhaps Alex is right afterall. I'll get my coat and leave... :coat:

sigma 18-35 1.8 art is a hell of a lens for crop sensors mate ;-)

15-85mm is excellent though is not FF of course.
