Annoyingly, my 24-105 F4 has packed in the day before I'm due to go away. It's the well-known sticky aperture blades issue - you can still take pictures with it but it makes a racket when you do, I'm sure it can't be doing it any good. I've heard it's around £100 to repair, which isn't disastrous but obviously I can't get it done in 24 hours!

Question is, I won't need it much on holiday as I can use my 50 prime, but I want something wider as I'm going up the Shard in London on Tuesday. Would I be able to get away with using it for a few shots at the top, or is it not worth risking further damage?

Thanks

Why don't you rent yourself a really nice wide angle one or even the 24-70 is not that expensive and really easy to do.

I rented a 17-40 when I went to New York and I wouldn't be opposed to renting again, I used a great company with great service (I forget the name), but unfortunately it's not really an option as I leave Tuesday morning.

What is the worst that could happen if you keep using it? Break broken aperture a bit more? It will need to get replaced anyway, but maybe you could stick to certain aperture values that involve less movement (ie. fairly wide open)

Or just buy something like that 17-40 from a shop. You have a couple weeks to take it back if thats a bad copy, etc.

That's what I was hoping someone would say. I tried using DoF preview button and it's only sticky at high apertures (although it still makes a noise when trying to AF at F4).

It also seems worse at longer focal lengths, so if I stick to 24mm and F4 for a few shots, should be alright?
