Broadband speed throttle

Until we went on holiday about a month ago we were getting free broadband at around 2.5 Mb/s most of the time, which I could live with.

When we got back the BB would hardly connect at all and it seems to have settled at around 0.25 Mb/s, which is virtually useless.

Is it possible/likely that while we were away the provider throttled our speed to make us upgrade to something paid for?

Many reasons for a change(?) in service speed but this forum http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/ is good for seeing what other ISP users are experiencing.

Is there any info & change of service details on the ISP website??? Everything is in the details ;)

Doubtful. Ofcom would have something to say about that.

Try powering the router off for 20 mins and try again. If not contact your ISP support, lines will throttle back if the connection is unreliable at a higher speed so may just be a fault

Done that dozens of times........ it has been consistently pathetic for the last three weeks and we have given up on it. Fortunately there is a green box just outside our house now - way out in the wilds of Wales - so we've signed up for fibre BB. Not ee, I might add........

I suppose we've had a good run - free broadband for about the last 15 years.......

When I got my first mobile phone contract Orange were offering free home BB. I've managed to keep it for all these years despite them trying to claim on several occasions that it was a limited time offer.

I did phone the retentions people at ee and said that I suspected it had been throttled. They said they would never do that but that my guaranteed minimum speed was 0 Mb/s.

Initially ask the ISP to do a line check that will reveal if your line has connection issues.

If there are issues switching to fibre will not necessarily cure that, as follows

1) is the new cabinet one that has the fibre equipment in it. If not it could be some distance to the green box cabinet that is fibre enabled.....so more copper with possible fault in it!
2) the connection from any cabinet to your house......or the house wiring could have a fault?

In other words without knowing where the fault is, simply switching the a fibre provider will not guarantee a "cure".

Yes get fiber. Broadband is dead. I went from 0.75 mbps bb to 300+ mbps overnight and I'm in the middle of nowhere in Wales, same as you.

Did they put the new cabinet in whilst you were away? Coincidence? Maybe

The fibre box has been there for a while and neighbours are getting good speeds from it. We are getting connected tomorrow so that will be the moment of truth.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Best of luck with the "installation" and getting decent fibre appropriate speeds :)
