OK so I am going to Silverstone again!! Woohoo!! I know its fenced to the hill and horrible for cameras, but where would the best place be to go in GA??? Yes I do plan on getting there very very early :) :)

Hey Dave!!!

Your not the only one going to Silverstone again. I've gotten the bug too and bought tickets to Spa whilst I was at it :(

You going for the weekend, just quali, just race? Would be good to meet up?

Last year I went for race day only and I went to Becketts and got some really good side on pan shots which I plan on doing this year.

But I've got a few other places in mind like Luffield, Club and Stowe on the agenda too.

I'll be going to the F1 this year too, it'll be my first time seeing F1 live so looking forward to it.
Do most people with GA tend to get there early and just stick to one corner (if so which corners seem best for photos above the fence line?)
Do you tend to move around while the race is on? if so is it very easy to slot back into the crowd at a decent position for more shots on a different corner?

Hey Ben,

From my experience last year it was a case of get a good spot early and refrain from needing to move throughout the day.

If you go on Free Practice or Quali days its much quieter.

For good action shots I find Becketts/ Maggots is a good bet. It's not necessarily over the fence but you can shoot through easily if your at the front :)

I'm only going for race day so unfortunately wont get much chance to get some shots other than race day.

I'll most likely opt to stay in one place for most of the day then as don't really want to be struggling to get a good view was just hoping i could move about a bit in the earlier races to see the stands and shops etc.

Well where I was I know it was packed anyway. Might be better to move at quieter sections of the track?

But I started looking around after the event and looked around the shops because I think they stay open quite late and avoids you having to queue for hours in traffic.

That sounds like a very good idea to me. just hope the weathers good for us to be stood round all day.

I got drenched last year as it rained just before the race. But it made for some awesome shots with spray flying off the back :)

As much fun as the rain would make the racing I'm just praying for a dry day,
with weather like this at the moment it'll be freezing if it rains too.
Should try to meet up and then atleast we'll have some one to shoot with, I'm sure I'll find your experience shooting F1 usefull ;)

I'd love to Ben but unfortunately I'm only going for Quali this year :( I've made a significant investment in terms of the Spa F1 later in the year meaning I had to cut the days I went here. :(

Everyone will probably offer differing opinions but for settings these worked for me. Well that's if you're confident in panning;

1/320th which later dropped to 1/200th
F2.8 to avoid the fences
ISO whatever to achieve the above :)

Ahh thats a shame, spa should be great though!
I'll hopefully be going to Monaco next year so probably just practice or quali next year at silverstone (it almost sounds the better option for photography anyway)
It'll be my first time properly testing my 70-300L out so unfortunately i wont have the luxury of F2.8 to be blurring the fences out :(

I got some reasonable panning shots from stands at farm and luffield last year. Will be going for free practice on Friday this year if anyone wants to meet up. Looking to try some different locations this time. Will be testing my new 120-400 :)
