Woke up this morning at my Girlfriends house and it was raining hard and gray so I thought lets try something new. Wanted that golden hour affect when the sun is just going down. I used 1 SB-900 with a orange gel on a stand out side with a bag over it to stop it from getting wet and remotely triggered it from another SB-800. This only took about 5 mins to set up and I think the results are not that bad. I put the blinds down in the window to add something different.

The pictures are not up to much as it is more about the lighting and just a test. These are straight out of the camera with no processing.

So if your stuck inside because it is raining give it a go ;)

Worked well your good lady is the best as less clutter, to me what would make it better is the shadows to the walls from the blind but not on your good lady's face.
Nice one

Nice work and using the slats is a good idea, I experimented with this technique at the last wedding and was quite pleased with the results, this was shot in a very shady garden which didn't get any sun at dusk.

Going to move this to Talk Lighting btw. ;)

Yeh they are both very poor photo's but it is just about the lighting effect did not even think about the composition of the photo at this time. ;)

All credit to you for coming up with an idea to make the most of a rainy day. I must admit I do like the 'golden glow' you have achieved.

I think they work, it would have been interesting to post some photos and get people to guess how they were lit.

I have tried this but I did not get the flash far enough away which I think is the key

Thanks for sharing the set up and experiment

cracking idea

well worth trying these things when the weathers poor , you just never know what might work

:( I got to go do a shoot in london today, wishing I had some gels now looking at these, would warm things up a treat. Great idea, looking forward to your next efforts

Just use a orange sweet wrapper if you can works the same ;)

I've got a shot coming up on Wednesday in a old building and really need some good golden light but if it is dull then I will use this method and will post some pictures up.

I use a low strength CTO on flash quite a bit, gives a more 'golden' light and makes the model look slightly more tanned than they are, which they never object to! Another alternative is to use the gold side of a reflector, especially if bouncing the sun rather than strobe light, gives a great light.

think this was a 1/4 cto gel on an sb600 on cls... Just don't overdo it and nuke the model in full cto or something and make them look like kilroy silk!

sweet wrappers might well work, probably a bit too orangey though... probably better to give lee filters an email ;)

oh, and OP, loving the cookie that is your kitchen blinds, gives a really cool light :D
