Bright and Dark Photos - How To Fix

Hi,

I was doing photos at my friends wedding the other day and I looked at the photos from before at the house and I noticed I have had the brightness too high from another photo I was doing, Is there any software or techniques out there to bring natural colour back from photos that too bright, like the sun is killing them and would love to fix them. Same question as above for dark photos too, any techniques or software you would recommend?

If the highlights are blown... there is nothing to bring back I'm afraid. Generally if too dark there is detail that can be brought out, but if too light to the extent that highlights are blown to white you are just left with 'white'.

It depends on how far out they are - From your post I'm guessing you don't have Adobe Lightroom 2 - this is what I use - and has some great features for adjusting exposures. Did you shoot the photos in RAW or Jpeg?
 
Without seeing them it's impossible to say, you could try duplicating the layer and putting the blend mode to mulitply, that might bring back some detail, but if it's gone it's gone.
 
Are you viewing the pictures on the back of the camera or on a computer screen?

If it is the former, are you saying you've turned the screen brightness up to high, or is it you've added some exposure compensation, which has caused the brightness of the images?

If it is on a computer screen then things may be different. It could be that you've got the exposure wrong. So how to correct this. Well weddings are notoriously difficult due to the extremes in highlights and shadows. Normally white dresses and dark suits. Plus throw in some sunshine and you've got some really interesting situations.

Best course of action is to download a trial version of Photoshop elements. It's a 30 day trial, after which you need to part with some money. If you have little or no experience of image editing use the wizards to help correct the photo's. If you find the program useful then it's worth buying the software. OK there is free software available. such as Picassa but I think you may have more luck with Elements especialy if you are new to this.
