Yes
I'm only taking one lens to London tomorrow. That will be my 35mm f1.4. I'll let you know how it worked out for me on Monday...

...to learn the discipline of shooting with only one prime?

Not really. You can use them on other occasions. If you only have one with you then you learn more about it. Obviously you do not do this on a once only occasion.

It's an excellent walk around lens, you'll be fine with just that one.
Having loads of lenses with you can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth, and even a mid range zoom can be too much.

At times you just need to get back to basics and travel light!

Have fun with it.

cheers

If I want to travel light, a 35mm prime works well for me as a walk around lens in London (though on full frame).

I can't afford an f/1.4L, so I make do with the f/2.

I've been into London on a number of occasions with just a 50mm f1.4 and found it quite liberating not to have to lug a bag of lenses around. Have just taken delivery of a 30mm f1.4 and am looking forward to doing the same with that.

It also makes you think more about your shots as you can't just whip out another lens to suit.

I only own 2 lenses, and they're primes. Generally take one out at a time. It's restrictive, but I've done this for two years and I don't even know what to do with a zoom anymore!

You don't really miss any shots with a prime. You just have to take different ones..

Been there,done that..........:|
Give me a mid range zoom any day........

The day I eventually upgrade my camera is the day I also buy a fast midrange zoom.

I'll get primes after that.

I do plan on definitely getting a nice 85mm though.

I just checked my stats and in the last two months, two thirds of my photos were taken with primes.

Between 1981, when I got my first SLR, and 2004 I never owned a zoom.

I'm happy.

Sounds like a sensible idea.. I spend 90% of the time only using my 30mm lens.

I spent yesterday shooting with only my 35mm f/2 (for various reasons!) around a stately home, it was, as it always is, perfect for the job. Sure sometimes you want to go wider, but if really wide is the order of the day, I step back a bit and shoot several frames and turn it into a panorama later!
