Looks like I've got myself a press pass for the Lotus Festival at Brands Hatch in a couple of weeks time. Its been a while since I was last at Brands, and I've never been track side. Where are the best places to aim for?

Can't really tell you the best places to photograph from, but can offer some advice on being trackside.

Firstly stay safe, now I know that sounds obvious but when you are looking through a viewfinder it limits your view on what is going on around you.

Having a Press Pass doesn't make you invincible, seek/take advice from the marshals.

Be careful about leaning against barriers and don't put equipment on top of the barriers whilst cars are on the track.

I presume you have PLI (£5 million I believe for Brands)?

Enjoy

1. Arrive early and sign on at the media centre when it opens remembering the deposit needed for your tabard.
2. Find a gate to get you trackside (after putting on your tabard), and have a walk around identifying places where you can cross the track safely later on during the day.
3. Work out the direction of the sun and where it will be throughout the day, and which would be good corners to shoot from at various times (referring to the race timetable for the races you are covering), and what lens you will need to cover each position.
4. Make sure you take your spare batteries, and memory cards, different lenses (if needed) with you, as well as some water, snacks and suncream/hat if it's a sunny day, and waterproof gear if it's raining!. Remember there are no trackside toilet facilities and few places which are shaded or provide protection from the elements!
5. Allow yourself enough time to get to where you want to be for the next race. It can take 20 minutes or longer to get from A to B, and you might only have a 2 or 3 minute window to cross the track between races if you need to (next to a marshal post is a good idea as you can ask them to give you a nod when it is OK to cross and try not to cross vast swathes of gravel trap :D).
6. After each race, check you have enough battery power and space on memory card(s) to cover the next race. Review and delete crap images in camera if you are staying at the same corner for the next race.
7. Plan where you want to be for the lunchbreak (to beat the queues at the food outlets), and the end of the day for an early exit (arriving early means you have less of a walk back to your car at the end of the day).
8. At the end of the last race/podium you are covering, return to the media centre and hand back your tabard.
9. Get home and start processing the photos and sending them off to your editor, or use the media centre if they need stuff immediately.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to list all that, all very useful. I'm beginning to wonder if this is to happen though - I'd assumed the guy organising this knew what he was doing but it turns out he hadn't read the entry form. He's still hoping to get it arranged but I'm not so sure he'll manage it.
