Hi
I'm new to the forum and would appreciate some help.

Bought a new Canon speedlite, 580 exII a few weeks ago and have not been very happy with it. Have failed to get as much as a response from the website where it was purchased and now considering returning to Canon as it's under warranty.

Just using ETTL, so I'm not doing anything complex, but it seems to take a long time to warm up each time. ie I can't shoot two images closer than about 5 secs apart, which is quite a long time to wait if your shooting candid wedding shots! I understood it would fire consecutively without delay several times.

Anyone got advice or had similar experience?

It also depends on how much power you are asking it to output.
If you are doing full power flashes it will take considerably longer to recharge...

i found with mine only Duracell gave the required consistent power
anything else soon gave up the ghost and it took ages to recharge

I would just like to point out that when it has recycled/recharged and ready to go the light will show RED, not green. :D

Yeah, I just bought one the last week from kerso, quickly found out that cheap batteries are no use. Takes far too long to recycle. Bought a pack of Duracell Plus and it now recharges very quickly.

Still trying to get to grips with flash though. Finding it underexposing by about one stop. Need to do a bit more reading into flash photography.

Having the same problem with my rechargable batteries. The thing is, they worked fine on my previous 580EX II but then I bought this new one and it's no-where near as quick as before? :suspect:

I use Vapex 2900 Mah no trouble at all (Nimh)

If you fire long distances at full power it takes longer.

Look up about quick flash in the guide. it gives a shorter recycling time but less power, but you must set the camera to single shot on the drive mode.

I use Nimh's fine but in a 430 EXII

I find them to be better than cheap AA's (which I have as spares)

Thanks to everyone for their help here. Been really buys and couldn't get logged on but I have tried new uuber batteries. Definite improvement. Thanks again
