Brake checking

There is a complete lack of consideration these days on the roads where everyone is in such a rush to get somewhere.
I do 40k miles a year and see some shocking driving.
I've given up now trying to "compete" with it and try and keep myself mellow and not get outraged by it.
I would rather set out 10 minutes earlier and take my time. Most annoying thing is leaving a gap to the car in front and then have some sap undertake and jump into it. Plus why do people think it's safer driving in the middle lane and not get over to the left once they have overtaken a slower vehicle?

But if the car has pulled out on you and failed to make adequate progress to keep a gap it does affect you. No one is obligated to let people pull out on them if people do pull out it I'd their obligation to at least pull away and maintain the safe gap.

We are not talking about a car pulling out, i am talking about giving the car in front adequate distance.

My car is sitting in my drive, I couldn't care less about a car in Australia pulling out of a road.

I would care however if I am up in his arse after he pulled out.

It is not about the car in front give you enough of a gap, the onus is on the car BEHIND providing a gap. If you disagree with that, overtake the car.

Then why is this all thrown out of the window when driving in the real world?
Because post test, no one drives with an examiner in the passenger seat.

get a dashcam an FFS stop crying.
The UK is full of all the driving trash of europe and that is what you get.

I feel safer driving in Greece.

How things have changed in the 15 years since I was last there ;)

i know but this thead is just going round and round and round.................

the roads are s***E.....

get a dash cam

But that won't stop people pulling out in front or generally acting like t***ts though will it?

nothing will thats the point
the roads are full of t***s

There's surely a joke lurking here what with your username hehe ;)

no it is not i ride a motorbike i know how many t***ts there are in cars more than most.

Jesus chill!

I used to ride bikes and gave up for that very reason. I do miss it though.

You need to read the highway code on pulling out into traffic. Conrad mentioned it earlier. You are supposed to do it safely not causing anyone to brake or change direction. If you do pull out on traffic it is your responsibility to do it safely and accelerate up to speed as quick as possible to not hinder the traffic you have pulled out on. What you feel you should or shouldn't do whilst your car is sat on your drive is totally irrelevant.

1 - don't pull out unless it is safe to do so
2 - keep up to speed of flowing traffic

What do you ride? I had a ZX6R until I got sick of it carbing up so changed to a GSXR600. Great fun, although I low-sided it at Donnington and I'm positive something from that contributed to the engine blowing up on the M25 a few months later. That was an expensive repair. Not the best bike for London traffic though but better than a car or the tube.

I know what you mean about cabs, got a few bikes, a versys 650 mk2 my work horse. Also a honda cbf500 which i share wit the wife but i maintain it and fund it apparently. also an old zrx400 jap special coming on 25 years old with carbs which i have just stripped and rebuilt myself.

Seems there are few bikers on here, riding a bike will tend to sharpen the senses somewhat.... I have a BMW S1000R, a Blackbird, a GSXR750Y and a CB500. I have been commuting to Uni on the Blackbird this week, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The 40 minute trip took over 90 minutes in my M3, and averaged 12mpg last week!

I think if you expect everyone to do the worst thing, and never assume they have seen you, or even care about you if they have, you won't go too far wrong. I've been riding on the road for 35 years and still love it.

For sure you do get more enhanced senses especially in and around junctions and town. I rode my zrx400 to the Macclesfield beer festival weekend and back just gone. 110 mile round trip it was lovely but quite a few fast bikes being a bit silly also. Saw a bit of overtaking on bends with double white solids.

This thread is about a driver pulling out on the OP then because the OP chose not to brake hard but backed off and allowed the car to slow and got a little close to the car in front the lead driver decided to brake check the OP. Your daft comments about someone brake checking a car 300yds behind or what a car is doing in Australia whilst your car is sat on your drive is neither here nor there. The OP wasn't tailgating, he just didn't slow his car enough for the liking of the driver who pulled out in front of him, said driver failed to accelerate to open up a decent gap for the OP.

This was just it for me, I was finding myself tense up every time a car appeared at the side road in case they hadn't seen me and was going to pull out. All the joy of riding was robbed from me.

I know what you mean, when i ride the versys i have two high intensity LED driving lamps which are on all the time during the day and they do get seen.
The ZRX is 23 years old so the lamp is not great, i just bimble arround a bit to be fair and tend to ride quite slow and leasurly just opening the bik up when out of town a bit.
